Shakopee in 2040? Still the Most Populated City in Scott County

Shakopee could gain another 12,000 people by 2040.

Shakopee could see a population increase of more than 12,000 people by 2040, according to preliminary Met Council estimates

Currently, Shakopee has a population of 37,076 people, the largest in Scott County. Savage is nearest in population size with 26,911. 


In 2040, the estimated population for Shakopee is 49,800 people—that is just over Minnetonka's current population of 49,734 and a little more than Apple Valley's current population of 49,084 people.

The estimated population of Savage in 2014 is 34,400. Prior Lake follows closely behind with 34,300 people. 

Scott County as a whole is expected to grow almost 35 percent from 129,928 to 175,010 people.

The preliminary local forecasts were released on Wednesday, Sept. 11 to "allow comment on local level assumptions and data inputs," the Met Council explained on its website. They will formally adopt revised forecasts in April 2014.
