City Presses Owners to Tear Down Derelict House on Oxford Road

A fire-ravaged house on Oxford has been classified as a hazardous property by the City of Shakopee.

The City of Shakopee has officially issued a warning to the owners of a home on the 6000 block of Oxford Road North, which was severely damaged during a fire in spring.

A Tuesday's meeting, the city council signed off on a resolution ordering "abatement of hazardous conditions" at 6079 Oxford. On April 3, 2013, the house fell prey to an arsonist. The fire destroyed 50 percent of the interior, and water and smoke damage have severely impacted the rest of the property. After the blaze was extinguished, the Fire Department boarded up the structure.

Though almost six months have gone by, there have been "no noticeable efforts to repair, rebuild or demolish" the damaged structure. The adoption of the resolution orders the property owner or lien holder to tear it down. If the owner doesn't respond, the city to will be able to seek a court order for the demolition of the house.

The criminal investigation into the arson is still open.
