DataCard Group Announces Decision to Relocate to Shakopee

The company will renovate its new facility and plan to move in September of next year.

DataCard Group has decided to relocate to Shakopee, the city announced today in a press release.

“We are very excited that Datacard Group has selected the City of Shakopee to move its headquarters to,” said Mayor Brad Tabke said in the release. “This is a testament to Shakopee’s continuous development opportunities and strong resources available to businesses in the metro area, and we look forward to a long and prosperous future with Datacard Group as we welcome them to this outstanding community.”

DataCard will purchase the 370,000-square-foot facility at 1187 Park Place in Shakopee. Renovations of the facility will put the company 50 percent over budget compared to initial estimates for the project, prompting a request for economic development incentives from the city and county.

The Shakopee City Council and the Scott County Board approved tax abatements for the company at a special joint meeting at the end of July. The abatement will occur over a period of 11 years.

Construction will begin in October of this year and the company plans to move into the new facility in September of 2014.

“The Shakopee location will be a great move for us as a company,” said Todd Wilkinson, president and CEO of Datacard Group in the news release. “I’m proud that we will be staying in the Greater Minneapolis-St. Paul area and have no doubt that the new facility in Shakopee will accommodate our needs now and in the future. The move will give us tremendous capability to help streamline our operations and manufacturing, provide a better customer experience and enrich our colleagues’ work environment.”

Jeff Smolinski, senior vice president of operations at DataCard, has previously stated that the company plans to add 120 jobs over the next three to five years.
