Spain's Running-of-the-Bulls Could Be Coming to Shakopee

A tentative date for the popular Spanish tradition has been set at Canterbury Park, according to the Star Tribune.

Canterbury Park may feature more than horse racing next spring. A version of Spain's popular running-of-the-bulls tradition is on the books, according to the Star Tribune.

A promotional group recently announced The Great Bull Run series will take place at 10 locations around the United States over the next year, including a tentative date at Shakopee's Canterbury Park May 14, 2014. According to the event website:

"This isn’t a charity 5k or a simulated bull run with people dressed in bull costumes chasing you down the street. This is the real deal, modeled after the famous San Fermin festival in Pamplona, Spain, but without all the time and money required for a trip to Europe!"

While organizers have begun promoting the Shakopee event, an agreement has not been reached with Canterbury Park, according to the newspaper. Canterbury spokesman Jeff Maday told the Star Tribune that track officials will likely attend the first event on Aug. 24 in Virginia first to see if it is a good, safe attraction.

Whether its safe for human runners or not, animal rights activists aren't happy about the idea. According to the Star Tribune, Eden Prairie resident Charlotte Cozzetto, president of the Animal Rights Coalition, called the run “a really dumb idea":

"The animals aren’t running because they’re having a good time. They’re running because they’re scared. Someone has done something to get them going,” she told the paper.
