Bit unethical to have an article lauding ethics but it highlights he's the mayor of Shakopee and hisRead More company is ethical. KEEP IT SEPARATE! This is bordering on political campaigning.

And what do wages have to with anything? To have these types of businesses and entertainment toRead More draw people into downtown Shakopee, someone, like a business owner must want to come in and start up a business. The business owner must put the risk and the costs associated with starting and maintaining a business. Shakopee isn't geared for that in the downtown area. There are plenty of people out of work to fill those minimum wage positions. Minimum wage positions are not meant to be household maintaining jobs. They are to be starting off points on training and learning how to become a productive citizen.

All good ideas. Maybe along the corridor have a Shakopee information center showing off DangerfieldsRead More and Wampach's and Turtles. Off course more is needed to attract people to downtown. Motel shuttles would help. Right now when I come to town I stop and get gas off Marshal Rd ans 169. Then to 1st av for auto repair. There are a couple places in Shakopee that is less expensive than anywhere else I go and the workmanship is better. So I make the trip worth while.

Hotel shuttle services are a great idea. I would think Valleyfair would benefit with an indoorRead More waterpark (Possible hotel) if they have room. Year round income for them then (like a wisconsin Dell style). I also think you need to deal with the smell. People cannot eat outside at places near Canterbury (like Siub Way, Qdoba....) because of that compost site. People comment on the smell a lot.

SO we are now discriminating against non-LGBT couples? The giveaway was developed and isRead More exclusive to a certain group. That is discrimination. Equal but still different and separate.

Oh come on. There are plenty of wedding giveaways for straight people. One of my own friends, who isRead More straight, won a free wedding photography package too, which, by the way, wasn't available to gay couples. It isn't discrimination to offer a giveaway to a specific group of people: There are lots of giveaways aimed just at new moms or only at women. It would be discrimination if this photographer refused to service straight couple because of their orientation, but if you look at her portfolio for two seconds you'll see that's clearly not the case. Get a grip on yourself.

I can not believe my eyes! Don't congratulate them! This is horrible! You're simply handing outRead More millions of dollars to a large business to build a suburban campus? Call it a tax incentive, tax waiver, 'forgivable loan', grant, abatement, spending, subsidization Heck, call it what it really is - a donation. They're all the same thing - less money in the government's budget. Whether the subtraction is above or below the line is just an accounting technicality. You're subsidizing them now, and you will again later. Over and over again on Strong Towns, the message is that the infrastructure for low density suburban development ends up being subsidized by our stronger urban cores. The image in the article, I would call the photo at the top of this page "low density suburban development." If you are going to subside something, it should be something that will bring in enough money back to the government to repay for those subsidies AND cover its own infrastructure costs. This will not. The infrastructure costs to run power lines, water pipes, mail routes, garbage routes, highways, roads, policing, fire protection, ambulance, school districts, to such a low density location always outweighs the revenue. Time and time again all over the country. This time isn't different. The suburbs are going broke for a reason. Wake up people!!!

This is a total disaster and the reason why the League of Minnesota Cities reports that most ofRead More their members will be bankrupt within a few short years. It's not the government's job to subsidize business. Most of the money here is coming from the city/county/school district, which are not funded through income taxes on these subsidized jobs. So the question remains, how many decades or centuries until the marginal property tax revenue from this site surpasses this multi-million dollar investment?

Andrew & Matt: It seems to me you would rather that Emerson took its business elsewhere.Read More "Handing out millions"? Look at the definition of 'tax abatement'. What Shakopee is doing is INVESTING in the community. If you don't like the sound of that, go ask the local restaurants, retailers & homebuilders if they think this deal will help - or hurt their business.
