There's Still Time to Apply for School Board Seat

Those wanting to apply for the vacant seat on the Shakopee School Board have until 4:30 Nov. 18.

Elections may have ended for 2011 with three new school board members but there’s still a seat open on the Shakopee School Board.

The opening comes after Anthony Bonsante recently moved out of the Shakopee school district and resigned. Minnesota statutes say the board must appoint a replacement who will serve until the next general election in November 2013.

As of Monday at noon, Scott Swanson is the only person who’s applied for the seat. Jeremy Casper, the only candidate not elected to a board seat last week, said Monday he has not yet decided whether he will put in an application. Former mayor of Shakopee Bill Mars said Monday he will apply later this week.

The School Board will accept complete written applications submitted to the superintendent’s office at 505 Holmes Street South until 4:30 p.m. Nov. 18. The Board will then screen the applications and select individuals to interview for the position. The appointment to the Board is expected to be made on Dec. 12. The applicant appointed will be sworn in to office on Jan. 9 at the regular school board meeting. Newly elected school board members Reggie Bowerman, Matt McKeand and Angela Tucker will begin their duties at this meeting as well.
