Shakopee School District Kicks Off Energy Saving Campaign

The U.S. Department of Energy reports that K-12 schools spend a staggering $6 billion on energy bills, according to the PowerEd website.

Shakopee School District staff and students are ramping up to take part in an educational program to reduce energy use. 

McKinstry, a national leader in smart building systems, developed the People.Power.Planet campaign to help reduce energy costs associated with schools. The U.S. Department of Energy reports that K-12 schools spend a staggering $6 billion on energy bills, according to the PowerEd website.

The goals of the program are to educate people about the importance of energy efficiency and how they can modify their behaviors to save energy. 

Each Shakopee school building will have two staff members designated as energy champions. They will oversee the program in their building and develop creative, fun and educational ways for staff and students to participate.

Energy champions for  have already embraced the program and the school is listed on the website as a top Power Point School. Pearson's energy champions, Becky Gothman and Kelly Williams, have gotten enough buzz going to earn 48 power points, putting them 23 percent of the way to the school's goal. Power point schools are described as "buzzing with activity to save energy and reduce waste."

Energy champions will post photos and videos of students and staff in their energy saving efforts on the powerEd’s website. The district and each building will receive a monthly report indicating the amount of energy saved.

Incentives, prizes, awards and recognition will be awarded to schools that meet and exceed their energy saving goals.
