Shakopee Accepted to South Suburban Conference

The school board still needs to give its official blessing for the school to make the switch.

Many local high schools have made the decision to switch athletic conferences beginning in the fall of 2014, and Shakopee High School is no different.

The school was accepted into the South Suburban Conference Tuesday, which the school applied for last December. The school currently plays in the Missota Conference.

“Shakopee High School looks forward to the opportunity to compete in the South Suburban Conference in both athletics and activities,” Shakopee Activities Director John Janke told Shakopee Valley News Tuesday. “While we have enjoyed our time in the Missota Conference, we believe our recent and continued growth makes us a better fit for the South Suburban.”

Currently, the South Suburban Conference is home to Apple Valley, Burnsville, Bloomington Jefferson and Kennedy, Lakeville North and South, Eagan, Prior Lake and Rosemount high schools.

However, Bloomington Public Schools recently announced it would be leaving the conference to join the new Metro West Conference. The new conference aims to align mid-size high schools from the Twin Cities west and south metro, while also cutting down on travel. Richfield, St. Louis Park, Chanhassen, Chaska and Robbinsdale-Cooper high schools are also leaving their respective conferences to join the Metro West.

The Shakopee School Board still needs to approve the switch, which is expected to happen in April, according to Shakopee Valley News. New conference play would start in the 2014-15 school year.
