Kids Voting Shakopee Gears Up for City, School Elections

Help Shakopee students vote in the Kids Voting program in the upcoming elections.

The Kids Voting program enters its tenth year in Shakopee during the 2013 city and school board election season. It is a nonprofit, nonpartisan and community-based program designed to teach students in the kindergarten through 12th grades about civics.

Over 15,000 Shakopee students have participated in the program since 2004, when it first started in the community, according to an announcement on the Shakopee Patch Boards.

On Election Day, students go to the polls to cast a Kids Voting ballot on the same candidates and issues as the adults. Voting takes place at the official polling locations. This simple act takes the mystery out of the voting process and instills a sense of pride, empowerment and responsibility which stays with the student into adulthood.
