DataCard Requests Tax Abatement Incentive of Over $600,000

The Shakopee City Council and Scott County Board will hold a joint meeting and public hearing on the company's request on July 29.

DataCard Corporation, a secure identification company currently based in Minnetonka, is considering moving to Shakopee to fit its needs for a larger facility.

DataCard's current workforce of 680 employees would also relocate to the facility.

As part of the negotiations with the City of Shakopee and Scott County, the company has requested an economic development tax abatement incentive totaling $659,193.

The city and the county are holding a joint meeting and public hearing on the request at Shakopee City Hall on Monday, July 29 at 7 p.m.

The facility that the company is looking to move to is located at 1187 Park Place in Shakopee. DataCard anticipates a total cost of about $30 million on acquiring the property, construction and renovation, and furniture, fixtures and equipment.

Renovations to the property will increase its value and include, according to information from Scott County:

  • Converting existing manufacturing space to office space,
  • Expanding the building to add a cafeteria and employee work-out room,
  • Adding additional parking spaces and addition of an exterior courtyard for outdoor dining,
  • Constructing a second floor mezzanine with a connection bridge to the existing offices.
Renovations to the building will put the company 50 percent over budget for the project. DataCard has requested a tax abatement from the city of not more than $334,869 over 11 years. The request from the county is a tax abatement of not more than $324,324, also over 11 years.

Under consideration at the county level is an incentive regarding the use of the county's fiber network.

The Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) may also contribute up to $900,000 from its Minnesota Investment Fund and Minnesota Job Skills Partnership.

According to Scott County, DataCard Group "had 2012 annual revenues of approximately $500 million." They have facilities in three other states besides Minnesota and more than 1,300 employees in 45 countries.
