Peter Christopher Nunn, 41, robbed Payless ShoeSource, 8510 Springbrook Dr., Coon Rapids of about $300 on Jan. 5, the indictment says, and two days later robbed Famous Footwear, 1593 E. 17th Ave., Shakopee, of about $700.

Each of two counts of interference with commerce by robbery could bring as much as 20 years behind bars under the 1946 Hobbs Act, which allows "federal prosecutors to prosecute violent habitual criminals who commit armed robberies in places of business that involve interstate commerce," according to a statement from the U.S. Attorney for the District of Minnesota.

Police said Nunn bought a BB gun at the Fridley Walmart store on Jan. 5, then crossed the street to the Payless store, where he forced employees into the restroom.

Charges filed earlier in Scott County District Court said he then robbed Famous Footweat on Jan. 7, leading police on a chase ending with a standoff in a Target parking lot in Savage.

That criminal complaint claimed Nunn told police he robbed the stores for money to pay rent in Fridley.
