Shakopee Police Seek Leads, Urge Caution After Spike in Home Burglaries

Earlier this month, police say a younger woman scared off an intruder who came into her home on Westchester Avenue.

Shakopee police are urging residents to be extra alert after a recent spike of home burglaries around the area.

“It’s hard for us to say at this time if they’re linked,” said police investigations Sgt. John Buetow, about the half-dozen burglaries in the past few weeks.

Last week, there was a break-in on the 3800 block of Molina Street, near Canterbury Road. The sliding glass door in the back of the home had been broken and items were stolen, Buetow said. The family had been out of town at the time.

Earlier this month, police said a younger woman was at home when a man came into her home on Westchester Avenue, near . The man fled after she ran upstairs and called 911, police said.

On Feb. 19, a home near Deans Lake on Woodland Court was broken into and the copper piping was cut out and stolen.

Burglaries were also reported in the Southbridge neighborhood and close to , police said.

No suspects have been arrested and police are asking anyone with information about these crimes, or anyone who sees suspicious activity, to call 911.

“We’ve talked to Prior Lake and have heard the same there,” Police Chief Jeff Tate said, about the recent rise in burglaries.

Police offered these tips to help thwart home invasion burglaries:

  • Leave a car in the driveway if possible,
  • Leave a light and/or the radio on in your home,
  • Put an alarm system sign near your doors,
  • Keep valuables out of sight,
  • Lock your doors, even when at home, and
  • If you’re planning to leave town, only tell people you trust – don’t give out a lot of information to taxi drivers, etc.
