Shakopee Police Handle Triple Whammy of Incidents Early Sunday

Shakopee police officers and detectives scrambled early Sunday morning to take on a triple whammy of calls, and perhaps surprisingly, none were St. Patrick’s Day related, according to Chief Jeff Tate.

Instead, they had three incidents around 2 a.m. involving: a group leaving a bar that detained a burglary suspect; a beating at a townhome that sent one to the hospital; and a domestic assault in which a police detective was tackled by a suspect.

The first call involved a group leaving the who reportedly noticed a man wearing a ski mask inside , which was not open at the time.

“These observant people leaving the bar detained him outside,” said Tate.

The suspect allegedly had burglary tools and cash on him. A 21-year-old Shakopee man is in custody and charges are pending. Shakopee Patch doesn’t generally name suspects until they are formally charged.

In the second incident, police were called to 481 Dakota Street for a fight that broke out after a man showed up at the home uninvited and began kicking the front door, Tate said.

The man, who was reportedly an ex-boyfriend, was beaten severely after the tenant’s friends went outside and confronted him, police reports said.

When police arrived, they thought they heard a gun being chambered, so a SWAT team was called, Tate said. As people around the scene were being evacuated, a man came out of the home with no further incident.

The man who was beaten was transported to Hennepin County Medical Center for treatment. Two men and one woman have been arrested and criminal charges are pending, Tate said.

And, while detectives were processing evidence from the scene of that call, one of them heard what sounded like a domestic assault in progress nearby. When officers went to check out the scene, a man was refusing to leave an apartment at 509 Dakota Street, Tate said. When a detective tried to detain the man, the man reportedly tackled the detective into a couch. The detective has a sore back from the incident but is OK, Tate said. A 26-year-old Bloomington man is in custody in connection with the incident.

Correction: While the three incidents did take place on March 18, the third did not happen until around 10:30 a.m., when a detective was doing further investigation at the scene of the beating.
