Scott County Sheriff's Deputies Awarded for Their Life-Saving Responses to Emergencies

Deputies Nick Adler and Michael Turek received the Morris A. Miller Outstanding Service Award.

Two Scott County Sheriff's Deputies recently received the Morris A. Miller Outstanding Service Award for their actions that helped saved lives.

Deputy Nick Adler provided rescue breaths to a woman who had overdosed on heroin, according to the Scott County Sheriff's Office Facebook page:

On August 10, 2012 at 1:26 p.m. Deputy Nick Adler assisted the Prior Lake Police Department by responding to a medical emergency. Information provided indicated a 19-year old female had overdosed on heroin.

Deputy Adler arrived at 1:27 p.m. and observed the female was not breathing or responding. Deputy Adler immediately provided life-saving measures by providing rescue breaths until Advanced Life Support (Allina) could arrive. While Deputy Adler continued to provide rescue breathing, normal color returned to the patient's face. Allina Paramedics arrived with a Prior Lake Officer at 1:31 p.m. and administered an anti-heroin drug.

Once the anti-heroin drug was administered, the female patient became coherent, responsive and breathing on her own. She was ultimately transported to St. Francis Hospital.

Without Deputy Adler’s quick response and life saving measures, the outcome may have been very different for the female patient. Deputy Adler used his training and experience to assist in life saving measures.

Deputy Michael Turek received the award for his actions in helping a man who had been pinned against a tree by a lawn tractor. According to the Scott County Sheriff's Office

On September 22, 2011 at 12:37 p.m. Deputy Michael Turek, who is also an Emergency Medical Technician, responded to a 911 call for help at a residence in Credit River Township for a report of a man pinned by a lawn tractor and not breathing. A victim had been pinned against a tree with the branch across his throat.

Deputy Turek arrived to find that the victim had been pulled from the lawn mower by a co-worker and the homeowner. Deputy Turek coordinated the move of the victim to a better location on the lawn to continue CPR which was started by the co-worker and homeowner.

Deputy Turek held the c-spine on the victim's neck as he moved to a better location and continued medical care. Deputy Turek continued to rescue breathe for the victim until paramedics arrived and took over the medical care. The victim was air lifted from the scene for medical care.
Deputy Turek took charge of a chaotic scene and coordinated the response of additional officers, paramedics, and North Memorial Air Ambulance. His actions and response to this incident undoubtedly aided the victim in making a full recovery.
