Missing a Campaign Sign? You're Not Alone, Says Shakopee Police

Last week "Vote Yes" marriage amendment signs were stolen, but "Vote No" signs have been stolen this election season as well.

Several "Vote Yes" signs in Shakopee were stolen last week, according to Shakopee Police Chief Jeff Tate. They were not the only campaign signs to go missing, this election season, however. "Vote No" signs have been stolen too, said Tate in an email to Patch.

"It's not uncommon during election time to see a number of these signs stolen," Tate said.

When Shakopee Police find a sign, if possible, they try to return it to the owner. In the past, the police have found that high school students steal the signs and discard them somewhere, Tate explained.

"We're not sure if that's the case with last week's thefts," he said.

Council member Matt Lehman recently wrote a blog post about his frustration with stolen "Vote Yes" signs.

Shakopee Mayor Brad Tabke told Patch in an email that he hasn't heard much from residents about sign theft. He shared his general opinion on the issue:

"Stealing signs is a violation of free speech, wrong and should never be tolerated. I believe, as well, that the quantity of stolen political signs is generally overstated. Signs illegally placed on city, county and state property or right-of-way are removed. As well, we had some heavy winds come through the end of the last week that wreaks havoc on lawn signs. Unless people are caught in the act, it is tough to know exactly what has happened."

Tate said that residents can report stolen signs to the police.

Have you experienced "sign theft" this election season?

Blame it on the kids!

You can't tell the difference between some adults from kids these days. I've known kids that had more sense.
Regardless where I stand on the issues leave free speech and expression as well as ALL the signs that help show it alone.

I don't like the chief of Police's "blame it on the kids" excuse....he knows it is some childish acting adults doing this.

We may not be alone but a vast majority of missing signs are vote yes signs. I have replaced enough of them to also know where vote no signs are located and they have rarely been touched so stop the pandering - kids ya right! A great, great majority of yes signs have been placed on private property so dig a little deeper for another poor explanation mayor.

I've had two Vote No signs stolen from my yard. When I went to buy my third, I was told by MN United that they'd had hundreds of recovered ones found in dumpsters, etc returned to them. NaturalLaw, why do you think the majority are Vote Yes signs?

A majority are yes because I have traversed most parts of Shakopee replacing 70+ signs and in all my travels (almost daily) I have seen the same no signs in place unless they are replaced at night and I clearly don't any replacing is done at night only stealing. Dumpsters are not found here with them in. I believe there is desperation out there so it has come to "operation take-down" instead of knocking on a door to ask questions in a civilized manner of why a person(s) is voting a certain way.
