Mdewakanton Sioux Elder, Fluent Dakota Speaker Dies at Age 74: Recent Deaths, Week of May 18, 2013

The Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community is mourning the loss of Delores "Skip" Bluestone, who passed away on May 16, 2013.

Delores "Skip" Bluestone, 74,  died on May 16, 2013, at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis. She had been ill since April 26, 2013. Delores was a member of the Shakopee Mdewakanton Sioux Community. She is described as a traditional Dakota elder and fluent speaker of the Dakota language. 

A funeral service will be held on Monday, May 20, 2013, at 11 a.m., at the Tiowakan Spiritual Center, 14625 Prairiegrass Drive, Prior Lake. A traditional all night wake will be held in her honor on Sunday, May 19, 2013, after 4 p.m., with a prayer service at 7 p.m.

A private interment will take place at Prairie Island Indian Community, Welch, Minnesota, at a later date.

Milton Gustave Pautsch

Milton Gustave Pautsch, of Burnsville, passed away May 15, 2013 at the age of 92. He is preceded in death by his wife, Delores and daughter Betsey. He is survived by children, Floyd (Jan) Pautsch, Joy (George) Hall and Bonnie (Sergei Dyakin) Pautsch-Dyakin; grandchildren, Jonathon, Nickolas, Alex, Andrew and Anthony; special niece Gwen (Gene) Zimmermann and their children Kiersten and Raisha; sister, Estelle (John) Phillips. 

Fred L. Alstrom

Fred L. Alstrom, of Burnsville, died on May 13, 2013 at the age of 75. Fred was the owner and operator of Lakeville Machine, a business he ran for 35 years. He is preceded in death by his son, Mark. He is survived by his loving wife of 23 years, Marlys; children, Debbie (Myron) Drellack, Karen (Everett) Lundeen-Fontaine and Jolene (Jeremey) Dupey; grandchildren, Ben, Mike, Jenny, Samantha, Ashley, Kayla, Bailey and Marcus; great-granddaughter, Kaylee; siblings, Charlene Brose and Nancy Wells, also by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. 

Virgil L. Johnson

Virgil L. Johnson, of Shakopee, died on May 15, 2013 at the age of 82. Johnson was originally from Minneapolis. He was a veteran of the US Army. A funeral service is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Monday, May 20, 2013 with visitation one hour before at Henry W. Anderson Mortuary, 3640 23rd Avenue South, Minneapolis. Interment will take place at Acacia Park in Mendota Heights. 

David M.Cummings

David M.Cummings, of Burnsville, passed away unexpectedly on May 14, 2013 at the age of 53. A memorial for David will be held on Monday, May 20 at 11 a.m. at Hope Lutheran Church, 5728 Cedar Avenue South, Minneapolis. A gathering of family and friends is scheduled for 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, May 19 at the church and also one hour prior to the service.  

Chris C. Clemens

Chris C. Clemens, formerly of Shakopee, died on Friday, May 10, 2013 at his home in Owatonna at the age of 47. Chris attended Shakopee High School. During his spare time he loved hunting and fishing.

Lowell D. Roehl

Lowell D. Roehl, formerly of Burnsville, died unexpectedly on May 15, 2013 at St. Gertrude’s Health and Rehabilitation Center at the age of 83.

Roehl was born May 28, 1929 in Bellingham, MN. He grew up on a family farm, then served in the Minnesota National Guard and the US Army. He met his wife, Oriette “Chris,” after moving to Minneapolis. The couple raised their two children in Bloomington, then moved to Burnsville to enjoy their retirement.

In October 2012, the two returned to Bloomington, where Chris died in December.
