Do you or someone you know have asthma?

asthma sufferers read on...

This is my families personal story.  Both of my boys have asthma.  My oldest developed it at a very young age and took preventative medication for years.  To this day, we feel the steroids he took most likely stunted his growth.  He is shorter than most kids his age.  My youngest son developed asthma with allergies about 5 years ago.  He was most miserable in Spring.  At first we didn't realize it was asthma.  The doctors would treat him for sinus infections, bronchitis, etc. when it was most likely allergy and asthma symptoms and not a bacterial infection.  After the 3rd Spring, I finally figured out that it was asthma induced by allergies.  For 3 years he was miserable.  He missed school, took several medications including steroids to try to control it, and he lost sleep long with other side effects.  His allergist said the only option would be allergy shots which would be a 5 year commitment.  Nether my son nor myself wanted to go through that process.  Therefore I searched for alternatives.   He had seen a chiropractor which offered no relief. (However, I believe there is value in chiropractic care.)  Then I got a call from a neighbor that shared a similar story about one of her boys.  She said she was giving him an all natural supplement that was helping his asthma.  She introduced me to the company that manufactured and sold this product.  After taking the supplement for 1-2 weeks,  I realized his asthma was gone while taking it!  To this day my son has no asthma symptoms while taking the supplement, and his allergies are better.  This discovery and others with this manufacturer's products led me to change careers.  I'm now on a mission to help others with their health needs.  If anyone has any questions or wants other health topics covered, maybe I can help - BeWell@integra.net

Very dangerous, to suggest this. Have you gone to an asthma specialist? Allergy shots do work for SOME people. Many different allergy medications have to be tried because what works for some doesn't work for others. I have had asthma, allergy triggered asthma since I was 2, 45 years later, and many steroids (try something called methylpredizone pills next time -- little side effects) and inhaled steroids and I had to find the right combination for me. Secondly, herbal or natural remedies could be dangerous to your son..what if he's allergic to one of the ingredients? Asthma goes into a non-reactive state, it doesn't go away. It is genetic and I have yet to see anyone change genetic code. My growth wasn't stunted, I am 5 foot 8 inches tall. Find a different allergist if you didn't like what was being given as an option. Yes, allergy shots take a three to five year commitment, but if after 1 year if they are not showing any signs of improvement, then the normally stop. I have tried shots three different times. Allergy shots build up the immunity to the allergen that the person happens to be allergic too. You are NOT a doctor. A neighbor called you out of the blue to share her story of her son's "cure"...wow.

Dear Heyitsme, (please note, this will be in 2 separate replies - my response is too lengthy for patch) I'm sorry you took offense to my post. It is my true personal story. I never indicated that I was a doctor nor did I actually tell anyone what my son was/is taking. Also, I would never tell anyone to stop taking their medications without their doctors approval. I'm the first to tells others, to consult with their physician. I only know what worked and didn't work for my son. He tried almost every allergy/asthma medication and steroid (including your suggestion of methylprednisolone which did make him jittery) on the market with little results. He had seen 2 allergists of which one was a specialist in pediatric asthma. It is a proven fact that steroids can stunt your growth. This is from the doctors we saw. That's why my oldest son had to be weighed, measured and monitored throughout his childhood.

I agree that some natural products may not be beneficial/harmful if you do not know what you are taking. Of course I researched the manufacturer, the ingredients and spoke to many asthma sufferers who had tried this supplement before I allowed my son to take it. Also, I could have worded it a bit clearer on how I connected with my neighbor. She didn't call out of the blue! We had spoken about other health issues in the past many times. She did call one day with information regarding this topic. I disagree regarding the comment you made regarding asthma - once you have it, you always have it. I don't feel it is always in the genes of a person. If that were true, then why has asthma as well as other disease become much more prevelent in recent years? It is most likely because of all the pollution and toxins in our environment, not because their family started to develop a genetic defect. I apolgise if my post offended you, it is a true story. I was trying to let others know that there may be other alternatives. This is most likely not for you, but it could help others! Best Regards, Mary Hoyt

It can be dangerous. Sorry Mary, Disagree, again you're not a doctor. It is genetic, it is passed down. And the researchers have found the gene that causes it. It can be non active. True story or not...sorry you're advice is dangerous. You didn't speak to a doctor about taking it. Why doesn't your other son take it? You said both your kids have asthma. You don't feel it's in the genes, wow! Pollutants can make someone react, pollen can make you react, food can make you react (peanuts, etc), cat and dog dander (I had a friend die because she had five severe attacks in two weeks -- requiring ER visits -- but she wouldn't give up her cats --- the sixth attack KILLED her). And again a neighbor offering up advice like that, still suspect. Proven fact about growth stunting ... nope. At the age of 12 I was already 5' 6"...I was taking heavy steroids (they don't give adults those dosages now, that I was given as a kid.) You said you believe steroids stunted your son's growth...now you say the doctor said it. So which way is it? You posted this, you didn't say talk to your doctor..you are giving out dangerous advice.

From Asthma.com What Is Asthma? IF YOU HAVE ASTHMA, ASTHMA IS IN YOUR LUNGS WHETHER YOU FEEL IT OR NOT Asthma is a chronic, or long-term, disease that inflames and narrows the airways of your lungs. Asthma causes a variety of symptoms that can worsen at any time, making breathing difficult. Unfortunately, there is no cure for asthma. Even when you are not having symptoms, you still have inflammation in your lungs. However, by working closely with your healthcare provider to manage your asthma, you may be able to help get your symptoms under control.

http://www.pamf.org - Palo Alto Medical Foundation Fiction: The steroids used in asthma will stunt growth. Fact: Large medical studies have shown that children using inhaled corticosteroids will eventually reach their normal height, although there may be very small, temporary delays in growth initially. However, it has been clearly shown that untreated asthma and the resulting permanent damage to the lungs have a significant effect on reducing growth. Be sure you work with your child's health care provider and the Asthma Action Plan to treat his or her asthma in the best possible way. Fiction: Children outgrow asthma or asthma gets better as you get older. Fact: Children often don't outgrow asthma. A child's asthma can get better or worse over time and some very young children with asthma may get much better as they (and their lungs) grow, but for most people, asthma is present the rest of their lives. Some very young children have asthma symptoms that go away when they get older. Other children may have asthma symptoms that come and go over time.

Dear Heyitsme, I'm sorry you don't agree with my story. This is not productive to go back and forth. If you want to know my entire story, every detail and my credentials, please email me directly. I did not post every detail or it would have turned into a book of great lengths. You are asking some of the same questions I covered in my previous response. I am only trying to help others and your opinion has been noted.
Heyitsme November 15, 2012 at 10:19 PM
Mary, if you are going to post in a public forum as you did, then post your credentials out in the same forum. I am not emailing you directly and neither should anyone else. You opened this supposed discussion but many of your details are vague and suspect and if anyone listens to you that has asthma, then they are putting themselves at risk. No one can sue you, and your are dispensing medical advice without a license. If you didn't want to "go back and forth" on the issue then you shouldn't have posted on this forum.

It appears no matter what I say or how I say it, you are not getting the answers you need. What is it you are looking for exactly or what is not clarified enough for you? I have been trying to keep this professional, but your comments and responses have not been. If you have specific questions, please ask. However, I will not get involved in argumentive commentary.

Oh, I am the one not keeping it professional, you are the one that is asking people to personally contact you for your treatment; and did it on a public format. You are a person that believes she is a professional .. Quit you job to devote yourself to this treatment. Yet doing public research, you are a marketer not a doctor yet you are dispensing medical advice. Dangerous medical advice. Your first post was not professional, it is misleading and misinformed and deception. You first said you are a concerned mother and your neighbor "called" you with this treatment. You are a marketer for an alternative medicine company; easily found on LinkedIn.com. So you argument that your above my questioning and your professional is not a reason, Mary Hoyt is a professional huckster. Dispensing dangerous and potentially deadly advice to asthma sufferers. Remove you post, that is a true professional.

Just for the record, those beating up on Mary and defending modern medicine should note that most (if not ALL) of the medicines in active use today are derived from sources already found in nature - the same sources in many supplements. All modern science has done/claimed to do is refine it to make it supposedly more effective. Also much confusion stems from the fact it is the FDA's official position that ONLY a prescription drug can cure or treat ANY condition. It has been documented for many years that vitamin C helps one recover from scurvy (http://www.thefreedictionary.com/scurvy) yet if I were state that it "cures" or "treats" scurvy, I could be found guilty of making a medical claim without a medical license, even though I was making a statement that many doctors would agree with.

Heyitsme- The internet is a place were people should be able to express their opinions, beliefs and ideas with out critism, insults and ritacule. Mary is cleary trying to benefit her community with her professional knowledge and work expierence. Her company has FACTS that have been proven by top Universities and Labs all over the country. If you do not like or agree with her postings then simply do not read them. As you stated above you are fourty seven and clearly you are acting very immature and child like for your age. Most people at age fourty seven have better things to do than argue and make childish comments online that are flat out rude. If you further contact Mary Hoyt on ANY of her online websites, blogs or accounts I will contact the police and get it touch with my laywer. You have no right to try and tear down her growing business; at least she is doing something productive with her time unlike your childish self. Thank you and have a nice day.
