DESCRIPTION:Local kids who want to learn how to surf won&rsquo\;t have to
head to the coast to do so. Students going into grades 3-6 are welcome
to sign up for one of two summer surf camps 8 a.m.-2 p.m. July 22 or Aug
. 5 at Valleyfair in Shakopee.\n&nbsp\;\nLocal surfers\, many of whom su
rf Lake Superior on a regular basis\, will teach participants the basics
of surfing in the amusement park&rsquo\;s Breakers Bay wavepool. The ev
ent\, which is in its first year\, is put on by EARTHandSURF and members
of the Minnesota-Superior Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation\, a nonpr
ofit environmental organization dedicated to the protection and enjoymen
 t of the area&rsquo\;s lakes and beaches.\n&nbsp\;\n&ldquo\;Surfing in M
innesota is such a unique experience\, combining one of the coldest plac
es to surf in the world with the ability to drink the water you surf in.
Add to that the thought that you&rsquo\;re more than 600 feet above sea
level and have no concern for sharks when you&rsquo\;re waiting for a w
ave in Lake Superior\, it&rsquo\;s a spectacular feeling to catch that w
ave\,&rdquo\; said Ryan Patin\, EARTHandSURF Camp program founder.\n&nbs
p\;\nParticipants in the event will not only learn to surf\, but will al
so participate in a beach clean-up\, giving them an opportunity to learn
more about the issues that affect local waters and beaches.\n&nbsp\;\n&
ldquo\;Protecting our natural resources to enjoy and share with our yout
h is important. With over 10\,000 lakes\, the headwaters of the Mississi
ppi\, the Boundary Waters\, and a large portion of Lake Superior shoreli
ne\, Minnesota&rsquo\;s waters are a vital part of our ecosystem. We&rsq
uo\;re excited about the opportunity to teach a diverse group of youth n
ot only what they can do to protect that ecosystem\, but also how they c
an enjoy it as well.&nbsp\; Valleyfair has stepped up in a big way to he
lp provide the perfect venue for the EARTHandSURF Camp\, and we&rsquo\;r
e thrilled to have them as a partner\,&rdquo\; Patin said.\n&nbsp\;\nFor
information on the event and registration forms\, contact Ryan Patin at
&nbsp\;earthandsurf@gmail.com. Cost is $20 per participant. Registration
closes July 12 for July 22 camp\, and July 26 for Aug. 5 camp. &nbsp\;L
unch will be provided by Dangerfield's (July 22) and Pizza-N-Pasta (Augu
st 5). &nbsp\;Please feel free to help promote the camp to your Facebook
