DESCRIPTION:Local kids who want to learn how to surf won&rsquo\;t have to
head to the coast to do so. Students going into grades 3-6 are welcome
to sign up for one of two summer surf camps 8 a.m.-2 p.m. July 22 or Aug
. 5 at Valleyfair in Shakopee.\nLocal surfers\, many of whom surf Lake S
uperior on a regular basis\, will teach participants the basics of surfi
ng in the amusement park&rsquo\;s Breakers Bay wavepool. The event\, whi
ch is in its first year\, is put on by EARTHandSURF and members of the M
innesota-Superior Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation\, a nonprofit envi
ronmental organization dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of the
area&rsquo\;s lakes and beaches.\n&ldquo\;Surfing in Minnesota is such a
unique experience\, combining one of the coldest places to surf in the
world with the ability to drink the water you surf in. Add to that the t
hought that you&rsquo\;re more than 600 feet above sea level and have no
concern for sharks when you&rsquo\;re waiting for a wave in Lake Superi
or\, it&rsquo\;s a spectacular feeling to catch that wave\,&rdquo\; said
Ryan Patin\, EARTHandSURF Camp program founder.\nParticipants in the ev
ent will not only learn to surf\, but will also participate in a beach c
lean-up\, giving them an opportunity to learn more about the issues that
affect local waters and beaches.\n&ldquo\;Protecting our natural resour
ces to enjoy and share with our youth is important. With over 10\,000 la
kes\, the headwaters of the Mississippi\, the Boundary Waters\, and a la
rge portion of Lake Superior shoreline\, Minnesota&rsquo\;s waters are a
vital part of our ecosystem. We&rsquo\;re excited about the opportunity
to teach a diverse group of youth not only what they can do to protect
that ecosystem\, but also how they can enjoy it as well.&nbsp\; Valleyfa
ir has stepped up in a big way to help provide the perfect venue for the
EARTHandSURF Camp\, and we&rsquo\;re thrilled to have them as a partner
\,&rdquo\; Patin said.\nFor information on the event and registration fo
rms\, contact Ryan Patin at&nbsp\;earthandsurf@gmail.com. Cost is $20 pe
r participant. Registration closes July 12 for July 22 camp\, and July 2
6 for Aug. 5 camp. &nbsp\;Lunch will be provided by Dangerfield's (July
 22) and Pizza-N-Pasta (August 5). &nbsp\;Please feel free to help promot
e the camp to your Facebook friends by "liking" EARTHandSURF at&nbsp\;ww
