FLASH POLL: Minnesota Republicans Predict Marriage Amendment Will Fail in Tuesday Election

Despite support from the Minnesota GOP, Patch's panel thinks the amendment to define marriage as a union between one man and one woman will fall short.

Twin Cities Republicans aren't confident the so-called Marriage Amendment will make its way into the constitution after Tuesday's general election.  In a flash poll issued Friday to Patch's panel of Republican politicians and activists, the majority believed the amendment, which requires a "yes" vote to be added to the constitution by voters, would fall short.  About 57 percent of the 33 survey responders said the amendment would fall short.  Our Republican panel also felt Barack Obama, running to remain president, had conducted a better campaign in Minnesota, a state he's favored to win in Tuesday night's election.  "It's going to be exceedingly close, on the Presidential race and on both amendment questions," one pundit said.  The …

Twin Cities Democrats Confident Marriage Amendment, Mitt Romney Will Fail

President Barack Obama's ground campaign and a shifting sentiment toward the two constitutional amendments have the state's DFL party feeling positive headed into Election Day.

Twin Cities Democrats think the state's most controversial issue–the amendment to the state's constitution defining marriage as between one man and one woman–will fall flat on Tuesday, making Minnesota the first state to vote down such an amendment.  In our survey of DFL influencers–local politicians and party activists–the Democrats also believe having the amendment issue on the ballot will be a boost for President Barack Obama, as he looks to defeat former Gov. Mitt Romney in Tuesday's presidential election.  Of the 100 influencers who volunteered to take our survey, 24 responded to our "flash" poll, issued last Friday.  Only a quarter of the responders thought the marriage amendment question would help Romney with turnout. The same …

Presidential Election: How Will Minnesota's Islamic Community Vote?

According to a recent poll, Muslim voters are more inclined to vote for the Democratic Party, but not all are sold on President Barack Obama: In October, a quarter said they were undecided about the presidential race.

Think Barack Obama has a lock on the Islamic vote? Think again. According to a poll released on Oct. 24, approximately 25 percent of American Muslim registered voters are still undecided about who to vote for on Tuesday.  The poll, sponsored by the Washington-based Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), included 500 randomly selected Muslim voters, who were surveyed in the first two weeks of October. Islamic voters are an increasingly influential group, though their community is still small relative to the general population. The Association of Statisticians of American Religious Bodies (ASARB) reports that the number of Muslims living in the U.S. doubled from 2000 to 2010, growing from 1 million to 2.6 million across the country. …

Kids Voting Shakopee Helps Children Participate in Election Day

In the 2008 Presidential election, there were a total of 2,500 Kids Voting ballots cast at poll locations within the Shakopee School District.

Kids love having an opportunity to vote, said Lorri Helkamp, co-chair of Kids Voting Shakopee. Paulette Rislund is also co-chair of the nonprofit organization, which started in Shakopee in 2004. Kids Voting Shakopee is an affiliate of the national organization called Kids Voting USA, which aims to prepare children to be future informed voters. By the time the children turn 18, they will know such things as how to find information about candidates, how to look up their polling location, and voting procedures, Helkamp explained. Kids Voting Shakopee ends up affecting adults as well. “Some parents have said that they wouldn’t have voted if their kids hadn’t requested to go vote,” Helkamp said. Kids Voting Shakopee sets up polls at the same …

Please be an informed voter: I think too much of the nation has forgotten about these four murdered American's... Obama is ignoring the issue, hiding behind the "ongoing investigation" mantra... It's a load of dung... He's swept it under the rug, and hopes to keep it there until after the election... I want the truth to come out now... Every voter needs to read this excellent article... REPLAY: Bill Clinton at the University of Minnesota

The former president spoke at a rally on behalf of Barack Obama's re-election on Tuesday.

Hurricane Sandy has curtailed campaigning by President Obama and Mitt Romney, but former President Bill Clinton will speak at a campaign event for the Democratic ticket at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis Tuesday morning—and you can watch it here. It's brought to you by The UpTake, via an internet connection that's not 100 percent reliable (due to the last-minute nature of the event), so the webcast may not be free of trouble. If you were at the event, or watched it here, please leave a comment below or add a photo to this post. We'd like to know what you think of it. The Republican vice presidential candidate, U.S. Rep. Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, was in Hudson, WI on Tuesday as well. Visit Hudson Patch for news of that event.

New Poll Shows Support, Opposition for Marriage Amendment Tied

Poll conducted from Oct. 23 to Oct. 25

According to a new poll commissioned by the Star-Tribune, support and opposition to the marriage amendment is essentially tied. The amendment would write a prohibition on legal recognition of same-sex marriages into the state constitution, reflecting current law. Some 48 percent of a poll of 800 likely Minnesota voters told the Minnesota Poll's questioners that they would be voting to pass the amendment. About 47 percent said they opposed the measure, and 5 percent said they were still undecided. Respondents were reached using both cell phones and landlines. The poll's margin of error was 3.5 percent, plus or minus. September's Minnesota Poll also showed a deadlock between the two sides. As the October Minnesota poll was conducted from Oct…

I can't believe some of the stuff that is coming from those that support this strange definition of marriage. Your description of human biology was simply disgusting. I hope that you aren't talking to young folks like this. The retoric about Minnesota teachers teaching same sex marriage is absolutely goofy. The state constitution or ANY consitituion does not exist to make law to discriminate …   more ›

Met Council Inspires Common Ground at Candidates Forum

The State Senate District 55 candidates agreed that Scott County needs better representation on the Met Council.

Candidates for State Senate District 55 Kathy Busch (DFL) and Eric Pratt (R) have their differences, but one topic at the recent candidates forum in Shakopee brought them in complete agreement. The structure of the Met Council needs to change.  The Met Council provides services in a variety of areas, including transit, wastewater, and affordable housing for the Minneapolis-St. Paul metro area, according to information on its website. It began as an advisory committee, Pratt claimed, but today the council does the work that formerly cities and counties handled. “We don’t have a Scott County representative on the Met Council today and we need one,” said Pratt. “We need somebody there representing our views. The Met Council is appointed by …

Voter ID Amendment: Voice of People Or A Gridlocked Minnesota State Legislature?

State House District 55A candidates Mike Beard and Chuck Berg agreed on the general idea of a voter ID system, but not on the way to develop and implement it.

“Do you support the voter ID amendment and why?” asked moderator Rob O’Neil at the recent state senate and house district candidates forum. The Brookwood Community Church Pastor posed the question to State House District 55A candidates Mike Beard (R) incumbent and Chuck Berg (DFL). The house candidates participated in a debate separate from the senate candidates. Berg responded first. “I want good honest elections and I want people to feel that the vote they have is going to be honored, and it’s not going to be spoiled by people that cheat the system,” he said. While Berg said that he is in favor of some form of a voter ID system, he does not support the amendment. He argued that Governor Mark Dayton and the state legislature should work …
