US Congressman John Kline Takes Questions at Shakopee Town Hall Meeting

US Congressman John Kline (R-Minn.) didn’t waste time giving a spiel before taking questions for a little over an hour at a town hall meeting Monday at Shakopee Junior High.

The crowd of about 125 was fairly quiet until one question came about creating jobs and extending unemployment benefits. After a round of applause, Kline said there has been widespread bi-partisan support for extending benefits recently.

He said he would like to see the unemployment program reformed and improved, from the 99 weeks some states have had to what he called a “much more normal 59 weeks.” Kline also said he doesn’t believe millionaires should be eligible for unemployment benefits because the system is not set up for it.

Area residents asked about other issues ranging from Medicare to defense spending to nuclear energy. Did you attend the meeting? What are your thoughts on the issues?

I was disappointed that noboby thanked Congressman Kline for his service to our country both in the military and elected office. At times the audience was clearly disrespectful towards others of differing opinions and I felt some where disrespectful to our Congressman. I respect differing opinions however, it was clear the audience was as divided and grid-locked on many issues as is congress. I was amazed when a select few blamed congress for grid-lock while the obvious display of division was so present amongst the audience. Much of the division was either lack of facts, mis-information, and or party affiliation (go figure). I personally thanked Congressman kline for his services to our country, his availability to his constituants, and the facts presented on slides for the audience. I also suggested to him that in my opinion as a local elected leader that the people are looking for stability and direction. Iran is a flash-point to a major war, the European union is having all kinds of debt issues, and the USA has an enormous debt burden. I feel the people have no clear direction or plans from our federal leaders which could give the needed stability to business growth, consumer spending, and lower level government planning and investment.

I do agree with Congressman Kline's expand and grow GDP approach by creating a stabile environment for manufacturing expansion and job growth, stable outward projected taxation to lend future confidence in consumer purchasing decisions. He made it clear where he and Pres. Obama agree however, its clear to most after looking at the facts, that we need spending cuts, entitlement reforms, domestic energy plans, and a host of other things all combined to get out of the mess we are currently in regardless of blame. BTW insider trading in congress is currently illegal.
Defense cuts where discussed and it concerns me that we would tell our enemies that we are down-sizing to handle a single front war. I suspect if we get into a war, our enemies would then know we are defenseless and may attack on a seperate front? The issues and decisions Congressman Kline faces are huge, tremendously complicated, and seem to carry the countries future success in the balance. His experience is reassurring while his vision is realistic and to the point. Thank you Congressman for the efforts you put forth for the country and its citizens
