While Shakopee Police Chief Jeff Tate hopes that Shakopee never has to deal with a situation like the elementary school shooting in Connecticut, he says that the department is well prepared.
"We have a plan in place and we’ve trained on it, and we continue to train on active shooter situations," said Tate, "Not just schools but in a lot of different scenarios."
Officers and school district employees have participated in school resource officer trainings throughout the years, said Tate. Some also have attended emergency response training for schools.
Tate explained that for safety reasons, he could not describe the safety plan for Shakopee schools and other places, but he has confidence in it.
"I think we’ve got a good, safe school district," Tate said. "I think we’ve got a good line of communication with the school distict, and we just continue to prepare and train."
