Raul Rubio Mascorro, 36, of Shakopee, has been sentenced to 12 years in prison for sexually abusing two girls under age 16.

The girls, then 13 and 15, told a school counselor and Shakopee police about the incidents, which they reported to have happened over a period of at least two years.

Mascorro was convicted on Nov. 16 of first-degree criminal sexual conduct—penetration with a victim under age 13, and second-degree criminal sexual conduct—multiple acts over time with a victim under age 16, both felonies.

Mascorro's 144-month sentence will be served at the St. Cloud Minnesota Correctional Facility. His sentence includes a lifetime term of conditional release, which consists of registering as a predatory offender, supplying a DNA sample, and paying restitution. He received credit for 133 days served.

Mascorro faced four charges of first- and second-degree criminal sexual conduct and one charge of possessing pornography for a total of five felony charges. In August, he pleaded guilty to the two charges for which he was convicted. The other three charges were dismissed with the plea.

Mascorro was arrested last year in Indiana after the sexual abuse allegations arose. He was preparing to deploy to Afghanistan.

For several years Mascorro had worked as a jailer for Dakota County, and he won an award in 2008 for innovation in his work as a correctional deputy, according to a department newsletter. During the first week of November, the department newsletter reported that Mascorro had his name etched on a wall of fame for performance in various physical fitness tests.

Mascorro has been previously convicted for speeding, and window tint, in 2003 and 2005, respectively, according to Minnesota court records.
