POLL: Should 16-Year-Olds Be Allowed to Vote?

Rep. Keith Ellison favors lowering the legal voting age.

Should the legal voting age in the United States be lowered from 18 to 16? U.S. Rep. Keith Ellison (D-MN) thinks so.

This past week, Ellison tweeted: “Why shouldn’t 16-year-olds vote?” and “They can drive. Some have jobs. Let’s empower our youth.”

However, others on Twitter criticized the representative and the idea. Some said 16-year-olds aren't informed enough to vote, while others worried they would just base their votes on their parents' opinions—not their own.
