VIDEO: Jill Biden Promotes President’s, VP’s Support for Women
The vice president’s wife spoke during a campaign stop in Hopkins on Friday.
“I’ve seen firsthand how Barack and Joe stand up for the rights and freedoms of women everyday,” Biden said.
The “Women for Biden-Obama Grassroots Event” was part of a campaign tour through Minnesota, Michigan and Pennsylvania over the weekend. In addition to the Hopkins stop, Biden’s Minnesota visit included events at North Hennepin Community College and Macalester College.
Biden touted the Violence Against Women Act her husband drafted and helped pass in 1994 as an example of his support for women’s issues over the years. She also pointed out Obama’s signing of the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act of 2009 and his appointment of women to cabinet and judicial positions.
Democrats across the country have targeted women’s issues as a potential Republican vulnerability in a campaign against what they say is a “war on women.”
Republicans say there’s no such war. The same day Biden spoke in Hopkins, Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann told an audience at the Values Voter Summit in Washington, D.C., that the Democrats’ claims are manufactured.
“And before I start, I just want to say a word about this concept that you’ve heard about called the war on women, the so-called war on women,” Bachmann said. “And I just want to say I think it has about as much reliability and truthfulness as Bill Clinton’s arithmetic.”
But Biden insisted there could be consequences if Democrats don’t show up to vote in November.
“So there’s so much at stake at this election, and I’m sure that’s why you’re all here. And for women of my generation, one thing is for sure: We know how important it is for us to keep moving forward to make decisions about our own healthcare,” Biden said. “We can’t go back and refight those same battles that we fought years or decades ago. We’ve got to realize how far we’ve come, and we’ve got to keep doing all of our part to make sure that we keep moving forward.
