Homecoming Memories: Past and Present

Shakopee Patch found three former Shakopee high students and asked them to share their best homecoming experience.

Homecoming is one of the many experiences high school students look forward to every year.

But it’s also a time when many alumni return to their school to celebrate the team they loved so much.

Shakopee Patch talked to three alumni who were at Shakopee’s homecoming game and asked them about their memories from past homecoming celebrations.

Jeanie Brown (formally Bastian) graduated with the class of 1975. She was at the homecoming game volunteering for the Dollars for Scholars program that raises money for scholarships for Shakopee High School Students. She, like many of the alumni we talked with, has lived in Shakopee for most of her life. Brown is now a teacher at Jackson Elementary School and has had two children that graduated from Shakopee in 2000 and 2003.

Then, there’s Janni Hennes (formally O’Laughlin), who graduated in 1981. Hennes said she has great memories of her homecoming celebration, particularly of her senior year when she was crowned homecoming queen. Now with son Dan, who is a junior and player on the football team, she said she gets to celebrate those memories again. Hennes, as well as other Shakopee mothers, created “Shakopee Football Moms” t-shirts that they proudly wear at football games. The mothers said they are all are hoping the team can become Missota Champs again this year.

Lastly, there’s Jason Young who graduated just eight years ago. Since graduating from Shakopee, he attended Mankato State University and now works in Mankato. This year’s game was his first since leaving Shakopee, but he was there with a group of his friends to cheer on the Sabers.

With all the support from the students and alumni in the stands, the Sabers dominated the game with a 48-14 win over the New Prague Trojans.
