The Hermantown School Board terminated Kyle Ernst as assistant golf coach and accepted the resignation of head golf coach Cliff Ashby at its regular meeting Monday night, according to a story by the Duluth News Tribune.
Ernst was arrested June 14 at a Shakopee hotel after the Minnesota State Golf Tournament when police discovered he had purchased beer for girls’ and boys’ golf team members and drank it with them. Four students were cited for underage drinking.
“The writing was on the wall,” Superintendent Brad Johnson said after the meeting, the Duluth News Tribune reported.
According to the criminal complaint, Ernst told police that night that many members of the golf team were very upset about losing the state tournament by one stroke. He further said he wanted the team to have a "good time" and admitted he went to the store and purchased alcohol for them.
Ernst also took a breath test indicating his alcohol concentration was .064, at which point he was arrested.
He had been a coach since April 2011, according to Hermantown School Board records.
