Crime Mapping Comes to Shakopee

Shakopee Police Chief: This is a great tool for our residents to obtain public information about their neighborhood.

An online map showing where and when crime incidents have occurred in Scott County has expanded this week to include Shakopee and Jordan.

"This is a great tool for our residents to obtain public information about their neighborhood and the city in general," said .

The map shows incidents including burglary, assault, property damage, DWI, vandalism, theft, robbery, disturb peace, crashes and more. Users can look at a county-wide picture and drill down to incidents in their own neighborhood. It also allows people to choose a date range so users can see what happened in the past week in their neighborhood, for example.

It's taken some time to get the system up and running due to funding issues, Tate said, but working collaboratively with Scott County, they're now able to provide the service.

The Scott County Incident Mapping site also includes incidents in Elko New Market, New Prague, Prior Lake and Savage.

The information should be used for reference purposes only and may not be 100 percent accurate at times. Tate said there's up to a three-day delay from the incident date until it's posted on the map, so record keepers can ensure calls are coded correctly.

"We want it to be as accurate as possible," Tate said.

More modifications are in the works, according to the Scott County Sheriff's Office.
